Little brown dog
Little soul of souls
happy always to see me
since the get-go
You chose me and Kinan
to be your Dads
The runt oh so small
you beat off all your kins' wags
and sat down beside us and told them
“These ones are mine”
On the drive home
you even named yourself in rhyme
Never were you some average pooch on the shelf
Everything was your favourite thing
but especially saying hello with a grin
You made sure the humans
would get into the flow
Wise little Lakie, and so it goes
that the single most important
lesson you taught
was the wisdom in the joy
to my heart that you brought
The importance of knowing the
peace of the moment
of smelling the roses
and believing in romance,
of wagging the tail
and snuggling close
of manners and duty
and not being verbose,
and of having another soul to take care
of walks in the park
and of brushing your hair
and of knowing that you
were always right there
of looking into those deep brown wise eyes
of the fluffy little guru who knew more besides
and that thing that you did
when I had to leave you at home
you would lay on the bed with your Flea and your Bone
and wait patiently managing the house on your own
and never once did you learn to say a goodbye
such an incredibly wise little guy
for you knew from the start when even a pup
that goodbyes are not needed,
not worth the what's up
'coz always with you was the how it was so
in the greeting, the welcome, which you always showed
Yes Rufi-doofi there are never goodbyes, 'coz you know
It’s always and ever, all about the hello.
