THE LAST MAN ON EARTH

I wake in the morning from a night without sleep
With no dream to share, no one to greet
I open my eyes and it pains me to see
That the Sun hasn’t yet burnt off the hurt
that I am the last man left on the Earth

All the places we were, empty now, void
of presence and movement, of laughter and joy
and the love that was made
so my gaze I avert
I’m the only man now left on the Earth

Alone as I hear nothing but me
with even no wind to rustle the trees
no fish in the sea
no insects or birds
I am the last man left on this world

So I patiently wait here sat on the shore
as I have done for eons before
for a million years watching
for certain rebirth
but for now I’m the last man left on the Earth

One day I will wake and the sun will sing songs
and I will forget all the rights and the wrongs
for you will stand by me
our feet on the dirt
and no more shall I be the last man on Earth.
